"Breaking Barriers: How Adding a Psychiatric Provider to OB-GYN Offices Can Increase Access to Care"

by Stephanie Sweeny, CNM PMHNP

Access to psychiatric care for women is a serious issue that affects millions of people.

Women are more likely than men to experience mental health conditions, and yet, they often have difficulty accessing the care they need.

One of the biggest barriers to access is a lack of mental health providers who specialize in women's health. Most psychiatrists and therapists do not have the training or expertise to address the unique mental health concerns of women, such as postpartum depression or anxiety related to menopause. This can lead to misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment.

Another barrier is a lack of insurance coverage for mental health services. Despite the Affordable Care Act's requirement that insurance plans cover mental health services, many plans still do not provide adequate coverage or access to providers.

Additionally, there is a significant stigma surrounding mental health, particularly for women. Many women may be ashamed or embarrassed to seek help for mental health issues, and may not know where to turn for support.

Access to care for women can be improved by adding a psychiatric provider to an OB-GYN office. It is already common for OB-GYN providers to accept patients' insurance, so providing mental health care is a great way to increase access to care and decrease the time it takes. Women may seek help more readily if mental health services are provided in a familiar and comfortable setting. Furthermore, a psychiatric provider who specializes in women's health and understands the unique mental health concerns of women can provide more accurate diagnoses and effective treatments.

The lack of access to psychiatric care for women is a public health crisis that needs to be addressed. It is crucial that we invest in training providers to specialize in women's mental health, expand insurance coverage for mental health services, and work to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. By doing so, we can ensure that all women have access to the care they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
